Sri Lanka’s PC House plans to starts a business process outsourcing (BPO) centre in the Jaffna peninsula that can house 100 employees. The functioning of this BPO would revolve around providing accounting and back office services to the international market.
Shaheedul Hijiry Mohamed Rishan the chairman of PC House confirmed this information as they are negotiating with many other US and UK based companies to close the deal. They have also selected places in Nelliady in Jaffna to set up the centres.
Sri Lanka has many big large outsourcing centres that handle global firms such as HSBC, Aviva and Amba Research. But in the past not many global companies have experienced success in this soil. The 30- year old war that ended recently is slowly changing the atmosphere and is the main reason why large firms are observing the political conditions carefully.
Foreign firms have raised concerns about the communication links in case a war breaks out. For this reason communication would be upgraded by Sri Lanka Telecom and Dialog Axiata and would have a minimum of 2 independent providers as back up.
With Indian BPOs entering the 200 dollars per month salary category, Sri Lanka in the coming future will turn out to be a strong competitor.
